It stayed down there without any signe of neading to breath, the water was somwhat breaking the invisibility of the Number at time allowing you to notice that they had indeed some kind of thin fur on their body.

As you observe it move under the water a though occure to you, even when they were visible their tails wern't moving at all, as if those wern't ment for keeping balance, there was most likely another raison why they had it since they seemed like they had a raison behind evrything else.
