Hello Shardial ~
As for design 3, the purpose of this design is fine tune small details. (: This isn't a total redesign of the theme, or what you envision the name of the theme as - but being able to analyze the current design, pick out what is done well and what can be done better, and push the design from good to great. ^^ You may change every color as long as it stays along the same general idea as the original design. :)
If you take a look at the example app, the aeri remains within the realm of the original designer's idea, but the colors have been pushed to incorporate more variation in color and contrast. ^^ However, they are still visually similar. I'd think about it as if a friend sends you a design and asks for advice on what tweaks you would make. (: Nothing enormous - as you want to respect their intellectual property.
A little tough to draw a specific line - but hope this helps!
