"Well, seems it wouldn't hurt to have it around," he said...
a.) Take the potion and continue at the lake
...stowing the potion away in his pouch and continuing down to the shore of the lake.

You continue exploring the lake with Elysetta by your side. After a while, you hear a ferocious growling coming from in front of you. You can just barely make out a dark figure maybe a hundred feet in front of you.

As Malak walked next to Elysetta along the shore of the like, marveling at the sight before him,
he pondered his situation. Given his modest upbringing where women were concerned, there seemed to be something almost intimate about being here with her at this moment, and the thought made his cheeks burn.
He opened his mouth to say something to shake the thoughts out of his head when he heard the growling.
"Stop moving," he said hastily to Elysetta, his entire body changing in an instant, hand on his scimitar, every muscle tightly coiled an ready for action...

"Show yourself!" he shouted with all of the force he could muster.

Elysetta complied, staying still beside you. You shout at the figure, and it charges towards you.

Malak could feel his instincts and training as a fighter taking over as the figure in front of them began to charge. He always hoped to be avoid bloodshed, but there was no time for hesitation. He...
a.) Attack and e.) Push Elysetta behind you
...stepped directly in front of Elysetta, cutting her off from the figure's path and pulled his scimitar from his side before charging at the figure.

The beast was giant, black, and frothing rabidly at the mouth. Before you could react properly, it sank its teeth into your left arm.

Pain flared in Malak's arm, but there was no time to curse himself for not being quick enough.
He attempted to wrench his arm loose and strike the creature across the chest with his scimitar.

Your scimitar breaks the skin of the beast's chest, but it does not go deep, as the beast leaps away. Behind you, Elysetta seemed to have regained her composure after the shock. She lunged forward, grabbing the beast by its long, bushy tail. The creature reached around and sunk its teeth into her shoulder. She hissed in pain, and then held it fast by its throat. "Slit it!" she shouted at you.
