Short Story
Todd gave a small sigh. The date loomed over her. Her birthday. Usually this day would be filled with merriment and festivities. But this birthday was all so wrong. Her sister should be here. She should be with here and not buried on the dirt. She shouldn't be dead. They should both be here. Both of them should be turning 21. Both of them should go party at bars and wake up hungover the next morning. It shouldn't just be her. None of this feel's right without her. When the cake comes they should both be blowing out the candles, together. Now she would be blowing out the candles as one. She would be unwrapping presents as one too. There wouldn't be the usual switching and comparison of gifts. There would just be her gifts. There wasn't even the shopping together this year, running off in different directions, giggling as they try to guess what they got each other. There would be no more birthday wishes come true for her. Now it was only Todd. Only her wishes. Only her presents. Only her cake. Only her drink. Only her life. Only her birthday. The word is almost distasteful in her mouth, just another rotten reminder of all that went wrong and all she is missing. As long as she doesn't think think and just pretends she never existed it will be ok won't it? She can have a happy day. A normal day. Everyone should be able to celebrate on their birthday. Birthdays shouldn't be sad. Birthday's are happy. Birthday's are normal. Everyone has one. It shouldn't matter so much. It shouldn't bring back all the pain and hurt.She has to go celebrate without her though, for it is her birthday party after all. Her birthday party to celebrate and enjoy being able to drink. Her birthday party to have fun. Her birthday party to help her not remember. Her birthday party that just brings all the memories back. Her birthday that holds more power then it should. Her birthday was hell. her birthday would be over soon. 15 more hours. 27 more minutes. 12 more seconds. Just keep counting down and then it'll be over. The forgetting will set back in. And then her birthday will sneak up and attack again next year. Dragging her under, suffocating her under all the memories and power that it holds.
