That is due to downtimes occurring during the midnight hourly tick. Every day at midnight, the server runs a bunch of daily scripts to reset and update such things. However, if the site is offline at that time, those scripts get skipped.
At this time, the system isn't detailed enough to check for this so it just misses the opportunity until the next midnight tick rolls around.
If you've ever noticed that right at 12:00:00, the site will lock up for like 15-20 seconds before responding to any action? This is due to all the daily scripts running and hogging the database.
You can also notice the hourly scripts running at any hour:00:00, but they only last about 5-10 seconds.
I would imagine when I rebuild Sylestia, I will add an extra layer to these scripts where they will keep trying to run until they successfully run each day - or something to that effect. But, for now, it kinda is how it is.
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for taking the time to personally respond to my post. That really means a lot to me. And thanks for explaining. That makes a lot of sense.
Well, this has been an interesting week to say the least.
Obviously, our server began having issues beginning overnight on Monday. The issues continued throughout the week, becoming more and more frequent as the week progressed through the weekend.
At this point, our Host has completely changed out the hardware of our server - so new Motherboard, new CPUs, new RAM. Hopefully, super duper hopefully x100, this will resolve the issue as whatever could be guessed on... pointed towards a hardware related issue.
I imagine that if we still encounter issues - the next step would just be a full server migration. While nothing we haven't done before (we've migrated servers about a half dozen times now in our 5 year history), that is obviously something we'd like to avoid as it is both time consuming and sometimes difficult to get all of the settings put back the way they were.
Moving past this issue, we are also now inquiring on purchasing a second server to run in conjuction with our current server. The idea would be to have two servers share the load under normal conditions, but also to have the possibility where one server takes full load while the other is out of commission, under maintenance, etc. More details about this will come as we progress through the talks with our Host on the topic.
Now, onto Festival related issues.
Due to the maintenance today and all that - Round 3 of the Leaderboard Contests have been delayed 24 hours. They will now begin tomorrow at 12 PM.
Additionally, once again, all Brews have been set to 'Perfect' quality. All current Brews will remain at 'Perfect' quality through 8 PM tonight.
In regards to an extension to the Festival itself, we will see as time goes on. For now, it is still planned to end on the 26th with the bonus week through the 3rd.
Lastly, there will not be any Nightmare Lord Events today. I have been awake for over 24 hours now and would like to keep the load light on the server so I can get some sleep with hopefully the server not crashing again. =P
They will most likely resume tomorrow morning.
Overall, I sincerely apologize for all the troubles this week. I wish there was more I could have done about the issues, but they have largely been out of my hand and came with zero warning.
We massively appreciate everyone's patience and loyalty through such times. It really is such an amazing feeling to open Sylestia back up and be flooded with dozens-hundreds of players in a matter of 30-60 minutes without any use of outside communication. We can't thank you guys enough for being the best community out there. Truly, thank you!
Load balencing would certainly help durring the high traffic A system that cannot be spread across multiple machines cannot scale. But yeah Thank you for all the stress you put yourself through to keep thigns up for us *hugs* Make sure you get the sleep you need! when your exausted you cant think straight and scrrew up!
