It seems to be a backpack that the student had been wearing, too heavily damaged by the black stuff to be of any use, when you touch it, the material dissolves under your fingers. But it's too heavy to be just the backpack.

You open the backpack to find several textbooks whose pages are now illegible, several broken pencils, and a lunchbox - the exterior is damaged, but the inside is mostly unscathed, it contains an apple and a half eaten sandwich.

Yum.
He takes the food. Its somehing.
He checks the pencils-if one still has half anib or an eraser he could at least dk some poking of eyes. Or somehhing. Pencils are very useful for that purpose. Not that hed tried it. His aun wouldve killed him.

Find a good, secure shelter. He obviously cant go home-his next door neighbor wil have infected most of his family by now (the older ones were watchign some pg-13 movie and the youbger kids were at the neighbors house). The other neighbor on the other side who he was close ties wih were out of town.
He starts lookign for somewere where he wont be noticed
