do we lose the pet that has the trait in order to enter the contest?

Yes, you have to set your pet up for sale specifically for Faiona to buy in order to enter the contest.

I have a question for clarification. Do board pets count for this? I'm assuming no since it states pet must be sculpted but I just want to make sure. ^-^
