I play a site called wajas and they have the release wajas button where you get 10,000 Waja Credits for each waja released. I think you guys should give gold for release pets. I love this site by the way.

We will basically have this feature implemented soon. There will be NPCs in cities who will pay to adopt your pets from you.

I could see this working if the amount of gold we received was relatively small. I just hate seeing those "1g sales" where people are giving their pets away for free rather than releasing them. We have a lot of congestion in pets on the website that don't really have a place, and I think that this would encourage people to release pets instead of clog up the site with them.
Something to think about, at least.
EDIT: Oh, Krin even beat me to it. Happy to hear about this! :P

Seconding.
The site Flight Rising gives ~a few hours of work (I think it's like 2500 units, which you can make from one of the other site features in under three hours, or from one of the games in about five minutes) for releasing a first-level pet, and more for releasing higher-level pets. I'm not sure what the Wajas amount would correspond to here - basing it on the amount missions of the Sylestie's level bring in would probably work here.
It would really cut down on the number of extra pets - on FR, there are no incoming users to take the pressure off, AND 'exalting' a pet is a huge opportunity cost because both sexes get cooldowns, and all cooldowns are 15 days or more. Here, those restrictions aren't as severe, so the incentive of a little extra cash would probably be enough to convince people.
Edit - fixed a typo

What about the adopting means you can only give the town 1 pet every hour? Or people will be releasing masses of unwanted pets!

But that is the whole point, rather then them sitting eating food or being put on the market for 1g. Seeing as so many people hate to release pets *I think thats silly, but that is my opinion I can understand [not really but I have no sentimentality to released pets] why people don't want to release* but it is because of those people that we have this pet problem. if a restriction is put on something that is to be implemented to help us with this it would be redundant to have the NPC in the first place.

I still think releasing/selling back pets for scales (or an alternate currency other than gold) is a good idea.

ohh Flute that is a good idea, to be honest I was a bit reluctant to like the NPC if he deals in gold, people could abuse that, *not to say they wouldn't abuse that for Scales* but scales is a good Idea.

OMG! I like that idea!~ :o
Scales are hard to come by too, if you don't nurture often, we could get a few scales off pets~ <3

Definitely liking the idea for getting Scales in exchange. I only run on dial up so nurturing to get scales takes an hour just to get me about 100. Another way to get them a little easier would be helpful ^^
