So, I've been thinking about this for a while. I've seen a lot of players who are just gone. Sure, they might return or something, but even then they might not even remember their info.
What if there was a delete account button? That way if you knew you wouldn't come back, your account wouldn't just be sitting in the system doing absolutely nothing.
You could get a confirmation email or something that you have to reply to or something to make sure you didn't accidentally hit it, or have a little notice pop up.
Feel free to expand on thos and/or commet below. :)

No support for many reasons:
First: many people that are permanently gone have rare themes (including pre-tagged themes) up for breeding. And no, I don't support anything that would advocate selling or whatever the pets of these accounts.
Second: people return after years and years of being away. I've seen it several times. Just because you feel like quitting today doesn't mean you won't want to come back in a year or three.
Third: It would severely mess up the account numbering system.
I'm sure there are other reasons that have come up over the years of people making similar suggestions, but really it comes down to: what is it hurting having the accounts just sitting there?
If you just want to start over, you can literally give away/delete/release everything on your account and just start over without needing to delete/make a new account. If you're not deleting to start over, then what use is a 'delete account' button? Don't want to play anymore? Just don't play anymore *shrugs*

No support.
People here do still care about their accounts and if someone else gets into their account, they can just delete it without the owner's permission, against their will. I say no to this all of the way.
As much as many people would think it's a waste if an account is just sitting there, we all have lives and we cannot afford to login every single day. People do end up coming back here after years and that's because they had stuff to attend to that is important. Like me, I don't login every single day and I would hate to come back and my account is deleted because someone found a way in and clicked on a delete button. Just no. No delete buttons. I'm sorry if this may sound blunt but I just can't agree with this. All of us worked too hard to lose what we have.
If you don't want to play the game, then just don't. But there is no need for this. Sorry.

I support this. You didn't really specify whether it was others who could delete accounts, but the person with the account. So as long as the choice is completely in the account holders hands, I support.

No support, sorry
On another site someone *somehow* got my password and after transferring everything I had onto their account, they deleted my account. I would like CRY if that happened on here xP

Thank you for your feedback!
Just to comment on a few of your points:
1: Players could always sell everything before they left if they didn't want pets being gone for the entire community, although, I understand where project breeders could be disappointed if a player forgot to do this, or the future owner of the pets doesn't set them up for breeding.
2: True. But if a player thought they might return, they wouldn't have to delete their account.
3: Can you please elaborate?
Once again, thank you for taking the time to comment here; I really appreciate it!

Elaboration on third point: Each account is given an ID number when they sign up. I assume these numbers are all in a database behind the scenes. When someone, say ID #53478 deletes their account, this would leave a hole in the numbering of the IDs in the database. I don't know enough about how a database would deal with this to know what would happen, but I assume it would be something like one of these scenarios:
-The number is removed, it breaks the database
-The number stays there and everything else in that line of the database is erased. Assuming this doesn't break the database, it is the best case scenario.
-The number stays there and the next person to join, instead of being 150,000 and something is now #53478, which would just be confusing.
-The number is removed and everyone's ID #s shift to accommodate the removed #(s)
As I don't know how Krin has set up the databases, I don't know which is most likely, but I can't see many scenarios turning out well.
And, again, I don't know why it's necessary to delete an account? What is the purpose of it? Why ask Krin to potentially go through hoops to add something that isn't needed when there are many, many other things that are needed?
(This may all be moot, though, as I believe I remember Krin saying years ago that accounts will never be deleted, but... he may have changed his position since *shrugs*)
