What happened? When I was in the enigmatic grotto and I discover a loose of dirt, I choose to dig a hole and all of my pets are died and dint even give me a message. What happened?

I assume it was a trap and they hit the bottom of a hole and all got knocked out or something? But yeah, if you you dig it up, all your pets go boom unconscious without a message.
