After very careful consideration, Faiona and I decided to mass buy all pets for public sale under 1,000 gold. In total, this was 19,164 pets out of 24,000 pets (the total includes all pets for sale). So... a ridiculously large chunk.

I know that some of you will be upset that these pets were auto released and that is no problem. Simply send me a PM w/ the pets that you wish to be bought back and we will sell them back to you for the same price. Every transaction was logged into the database.

The reason we decided to do this was because the current pet market was FLOODED with 'unwanted' pets. The implications of so many cheap pets is starting to cause problems w/ the pet economy and essence economy. Since we physically can't make site-wide changes at this moment to begin to curb the problem (which we will in the near future), we felt that this was our only option to combat the problems in a short period of time.

With so many for-sale pets removed from the system, we have now just dramatically increased the value of all pets. We have now also increased value of generated pets and essences. That was the main goal.

We decided not to announce this prior to doing so as to avoid possible exploitation (players pricing every pet they don't want for 1k gold and then making a ton of money, etc). This way, it was sort of a natural process. In all, only 5 million gold was spent to purchase those 19,164 pets.

And as I said, if there are any pets you wish to be returned, simply PM me and I will sell them back to you. Every transaction was logged.

On a similar note, we have also decided to revamp the Advanced Search feature next after the Forums are finished. Not only will it actually function... but it will be easier to use and much, much more efficient. This should also help players find the actual pets they want to buy, etc.

...Darn, none of the pets I'm trying to get rid of were priced...Ah well, guess I should've just gotten my lazy butt in gear. *shrugs*

That was probably the best Administrative move I have ever seen on any website like this... I don't think many admins take that kind of thing into their own hands, so props for going for it!!

I do agree that the pet market is oversaturated, but although I have no objections to what you just did, I'm not sure how I feel about this kind of economic interventionism in general.

I don't really know much enough economics and market forces to suggest anything, but it seems to me buying up pets like this is more of a stopgap/emergency act than a long-term strategy. If you were to repeat it at any rate regular enough to make it worthwhile in keeping the number of pets down, it would probably lead to people farming breeders for gold.

Ultimately I think that if you want pets to be more valuable, it would be more sustainable a strategy to make changes to how pets are available? Breeding in particular, and the short cooldown periods, is way too fast and easy to really justify selling pets for more than they were being sold for.

I'm not actually complaining about anything - I enjoy breeding the way it is, and the number of pets doesn't really bug me. I just think it's unrealistic to expect pets to have a certain value when they are so easy to breed.
