She enjoyed the cold air, it reminded her of the forest she grew up in.
She pulled out of the den, smelling for the wolf, trying to find its track.

The sand is burning under forepaw but as you walk you see a sandy flash ahead of you and smell the scent of about 8 wolves.

It seems to be scent floating from upstream, not that far your guessing now that you can really smell the scent and how close it is.
