Yellowlolie, one good way to prepare for a Festival is to get the best Traps you can. A newbie is just as likely as anybody else to trip upon a fabulous Themed pet, which you will want to catch.

Also, during the Festival, while you are exploring the Festival Zone, pay attention to the Zone's chat window. Sometimes, a player will catch a Tagged pet they don't particularly want and will give the Tagged pet, or sell the Tagged pet cheaply, to whoever happens to be around and asks for it. This happens a lot late in the Festival.
As for the Plant Sylesties, nobody else knows how it's going to work either, so you are in the same situation as all of us!
PS: I'm pretty sure Nightbane has it wrong, however...Honestly, plant a Sylesti in the ground? What were you thinking, Nightbane? Use vermiculite!
