I run away and look for a tree to climb, hoping I can get up and shoot the rats from there.
Hopefully the rats can't climb trees.

Unfortunately, in the open plains, there weren't any trees except for farther in the distance. The safe zone was much closer than the trees, as you could barely see the trees. The rats were still a good distance away, you could probably deal heavy damage before they reached you.

I whip around and take aim at the nearest rat, and fire an arrow at it.
I repeat this until they get close enough to attack me.

I still haven't found the old man's necklace, so I go back and look for more rats to kill.
