It really just depends on the story on whether the book should just be ended right there when the main character dies, if it's a really good story, the author could find a way to keep the story exciting, perhaps taking in a new perspective or the main character is already dead, its written into their perspective however its side characters are solving the mystery of the main characters sudden disappearance only revealing it to be that the main character is dead instead of missing as once thought at the start of the story creating an exciting twist and still having it be a great read. This is kinda a mess but I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

Preferred writing genre: anything within the fiction genre is what catches my eye the most ^^
Age: 16 ( minor )
Pinglist?: yes please !
Other facts you want to be known about you or your writing: a few things:
- feel free to just call me emo or kuro if you'd like, and my pronouns are he / they / it.
- i'm currently working on an extensive timeline for two universes of mine via writing, those two universes being called " consequently, " + " demons or something, " and if anyone would like to learn more about either / both of those, i'd be more then happy to share ! :D

I write whenever something yeets itself into my head. And then write like two sentences of it and give up xD
Hey, sometimes I suddenly get random motivation though lol
Hmm, my brain is constantly running through descriptions of things in the background, which is probably the only thing keeping me from being horribly out of practice
I drown in homework and extra homework too much to be efficient
??? Kill them??? If the only reasoning behind that is so the side characters get more exposure, there are ways around that, aren't there? Couldn't you, like, just incapacitate the main character by a chucking them in jail or something and force the others to learn how to work without a leader until they get them back?
(Hmm I dunno if that's actually a good idea but I just materialized it out of nowhere)
I feel like that counts as killing a character for shock value lol

It's a better idea than offing the MC. jesus. I'm an author, and no words in the english language can express how stupid I think killing off the main character is. lol
The whole jail-incapacitation thing kinda happens in mine, and enemies have to work with the good guys to beat the Big Bad. That is character development, not 'hur dur imma kill MC because-' Literally the only reasoning behind that post was for side character/love interest advancement. I-
I gotta pay attention to economics class xD

I agree that if the MC dies at the end, it can be a good thing. A bad example of that is Divergent. However, I do believe authors *can* write a good ending where the MC dies. imo, a story ends when the MC of that story dies. However, the anthology doesn't have to end. The next book/story could be about a second character, who is technically now the MC.
Though, I feel if the 'MC' is already dead in the story, they aren't the MC unless they're a ghost actively telling their story or whatever. In your example, I'm guessing it's like a missing/murder mystery type deal. Wouldn't the MC be the detective, searching for the missing-ee? The dead/missing person would be a secondary/supporting character as we (presumably) never 'see' them in the story, unless it's through flashbacks.
But of course, there's Game of Thrones, where everyone's a main character at one point and they will die.
(I was gonna reply last night but was too tired to make a compelling argument lol)
