There were several reasons why Ryder didn't like his Ability, and there were also several reasons why he didn't often use his Ability. It was dangerous, and he wasn't even exaggerating there. It was dangerous, and dark, and not just to others. There was a certain darkness that existed inside of him, and it made him severely uncomfortable sometimes - especially when Jimmy would bring it up at family dinners.

The only thing that he enjoyed about his Ability was the perk of not feeling fear. Some people could view that as...inhuman, but Ryder knew that that wasn't the case. He was not an emotionless machine. He felt anger, and sadness, and happiness. He felt discomfort and love. He just didn't feel fear, and that was that.

"Whatever ya do," he said seriously to Paisley, giving her a pointed look, "Don't freak out. Ya gotta trust me, ya hear? Don't ya freak out." Even as he spoke to her, he could feel his Ability grow excited and his heart speed up at the prospect of using his Ability for the first time in years.

He leaned down and peered through the crack he had noticed before, catching what little glimpse he could of the driver. He inhaled the essence of the man, his eyes closing briefly. A thin line of white smoke was drawn from the man, held between his hands. He didn't touch it, not really, and yet, he was able to manipulate it, weave it through his fingers and over his hands. When his eyes opened again, they were pure black.

Yesss, I think we all fear blindnessss... The disssorientation... The panic... The debilitating, horrifying, beautiful fear... He knew that the driver heard what he heard, but the driver was far too scared to react. A feeling of power engulfed Ryder as he felt the fear increase on the other side, and the white smoke grow darker.

Let the fear consssume you...

He pulled the smoke taut, and it turned pitch black, growing restless as the fear overwhelmed the driver. Ryder's hand movements resumed, becoming agitated to match the line of smoke as he wove it through his fingers. The power was so delicious, so intoxicating...

The driver was blind from the moment the smoke turned black. He screamed in fear, and it wasn't even ten seconds later that the jeep crashed heavily into a tree and everyone inside was thrown across the carriage.

Ryder was awake again, and he looked around desperately, trying to find Paisley. He caught side of her blonde hair and grabbed her arm, pulling her towards the back door of the cargo hold. "We gotta go, quick," he hissed to her as he kicked out the door, looking out at the woods revealed to them.

Despite the fact that Paisley's entire head pounded painfully, and her body felt like someone had been using it as a punching bag, she forced herself to try and think more clearly. Whatever was happening here was major, and she couldn't afford for her mind to be so foggy. She may not like Ryder, but whatever mess they'd been dragged into, she was glad that he was here. He even seemed to already have a plan.

Fighting a wave of nausea as she sat up a little straighter, Paisley grimaced at how her joints protested at the movement, but she gritted her teeth and endured the pain.

"Don't worry about little ol' me, Curtis," she said to him scornfully, reaching up and tucking a lock of blonde hair behind her each, "Takes a lot to freak me out..." She glanced at him, her eyes like circles of blue and golden orange colored steel.

For a moment, Paisley couldn't understand exactly what Ryder was doing, but she wasn't exactly sure she wanted to. There was a feeling, a presence almost, that filled the cargo truck when he began doing...whatever it was, and she couldn't help feeling unnerved by it all. She reached down and fiddled with one of the artfully ripped holes in her jeans, something she did when she was feeling nervous or scared. When the smoke appeared out of thin air, weaving its way over his hands, she was mesmerized, watching Ryder manipulate it expertly.

The bloodcurdling scream that came from the driver got Paisley's attention, and she tore her eyes away from Ryder sharply, noting that the smoke in his hands had turned black and she realized with no small amount of terror...so had his eyes.

"Ryder!" she called out frantically, his first name springing from her lips unexpectedly, reaching out for him just as the jeep spun out of control. She felt her petite body flung across the vehicle, colliding with other people as they were all tossed about.

Everything hurt again, but when Ryder called out to her again that they needed to leave, and quickly, Paisley hauled herself up with a growl of pain and followed him out of the truck.
