Day Three - Continued (IX)
After re-arranging the electronics snugly into the box you snatch up a spare map and return upstairs, your head swamped with information. You'll have to go after K.D. You can't just leave him to die, even if finding him is going to be...difficult.
The sun is high in the sky now, and as you look around, you realize Kit is napping on the couch in the living room. He barely stirs as you flop down next to him, unraveling the map.
While the map is a copy, the lettering in bold black is Riv's handwriting. He's drawn a little house over by an area marked 'Kel's Lake.' Your eyes trace words and lines until, just about forty miles northeast of the lake, you spot another house marker labeled 'K.D.' with an obnoxiously cute smiley-face doodled next to it.
On foot, that could take you a day and a half to two days. The thought of camping out in the woods, especially now that you know what lurks within them, is not all that appealing to you. You glance over at Kit's peaceful form. Kit will be safer at the house; perhaps Tellus might agree to watch after him? But you intensely dislike the thought of trekking out there all alone.
You'll decide when it's time. You pat his ears, and then hurry upstairs. If you're going to leave tomorrow, you'll need a few different things in your pack. You re-fill the water jug, and for good measure, add a second one. The first aid kit is replenished, and in it, you add a few elixirs and potions. Not that they'll do anyone any good if those holes appear again, but in the event of anything else, they will hopefully be a help.
Next, you add a flashlight. Wherever K.D. is, you aren't wandering into pitch darkness without a light of some kind. The last item is in Riv's room, sitting just where you'd seen it last, years ago. It appears to be well-dusted, but it obviously hasn't been used. An old hunting knife, carved from the lost fang of a Vulnyx and reinforced with enchanted metals. The blue gem in the hilt glints in the ambient sunlight of the room as you pick it up. It handles beautifully, almost perfectly balanced. You're a little hesitant, as hunting is never something you've willingly participated in, but this is a matter of life in death. It may work on those Wailers, it may not. Either way, a small bit of protection is better than nothing. You place the knife in its sheath, and pack it as well.
The pack is a little heavier, but not uncomfortable to lift. You drag it downstairs with you and drop it by the front door.
Lunch is a late affair, but you have time to make at least six extra sandwiches to bring. Six seems over the top, but one never knows when they're going to need six sandwiches. Sometime during this, Kit awakens, finding his was into the kitchen to paw on your leg. You slip him some turkey and this time a little bit of fruit, which he happily accepts.
Once the sandwiches are thrown in, you decide to take a breather. Kit trails behind you onto the porch. Aside from the fact that the forest is a possible serial killer, it really is beautiful. The way the sun reflects off the lake, the soft hushing the leaves make as they rustle together in the breeze, the open, hardly-clouded sky.
"Come, Kit," you say to him, though he seems to already know.
For the rest of the afternoon and a bit into the evening, you spend time walking around the edges of the lake, throwing stones and splashing Kit back in revenge for dropping a dead fish on your foot. As the sun sinks and the sky's color morphs, little fireflies begin to appear. They remind you a bit of kit. Dark, yet radiant. You grimace when Kit decides to snap one out of the air. Fireflies smell odd enough, you can't imagine what they taste like.
When the sun finally slips behind the trees, the night's chill begins to permeate the air. As much as you would like to stay and watch the surfacing Kelpari play, you're hungry and cold. The walk back to the porch is brisk, and Kit holds a one-sided race against you to the door. He doesn't wait for you to open it completely before darting inside. He yips happily and chases his tail in circles for a good five minutes, only calming down after getting some dinner in his belly. In fact, he falls asleep on the kitchen floor while you clean and place dishes back in their places. Oh, the life of a hatchling.
He merely twitches as you scoop him up and carry him to the guest room. You gently set him down next to your pillow before taking a few minutes to yourself to change and such in the bathroom. As you finish washing and drying your face, you happen to look out the small window above (why Riv has a skylight in here is beyond you). Just within that little circle, you can see what have to be hundreds of stars, and countless more you cannot see, hiding in the distant blackness behind them. You wonder if Riv can see them. Or K.D., for that matter. If they're still alive... You just have to believe they are. They're smart, they know this forest. You try to assure yourself with this, but even after you begin to fade, you can't wipe the image of the massive black skull in the basement, and holes just about everywhere.

The temperature of the air seems to drop considerably. An uncomfortable shiver runs across your skin. For a moment, you swear you hear a playful whispering in your ear. As you turn around, you realize it isn't your imagination.
~Riddlemaster~
"Tell ya what, human. Answer this simple lil' riddle, and this Woodland Sprite Ferrikki is yours for just 100 of your coins..."
"I am found in the sea and on land, but I do not walk, nor swim. I travel by foot, yet I am toeless. No matter where I may go, I am never far from home. What am I?"
The first player to correctly answer Riddlemaster's riddle will receive a ping with the themed pet set up for them. You may submit multiple guesses. If no answers are correct, he will simply vanish. Please remember to ping.
