Still gripping you tightly, Shiawase begins quietly inching towards the trees, wobbling a little as she does so. When she turns her back to you, you can see the wound on her back - it's like a black chasm, weeping a bit of her white blood.

It's. . .pretty sickening. . .

"Compliments," Hitari mutters. "Nothing but false praise that edges someone closer to demise."

Also a good way to gaslight people if you insult them too, Itami says, smirking a little to himself. I've always wanted to try true psychological warfare. But most people die before that.

"Then - well - " Hitari spreads his hands. "We are both sharks of sorts. Why not practice the methods before your world inevitably fades and refreshes?"

"Look out, there's. . .dry branches all over the ground here," Shiawase whispers. "We need to be especially careful. . .stepping on one would probably. . .not be good."

Well, if we are so similar in that, then, I would say it's no use, Itami says. I doubt we have the. . .souls. . .to feel that kind of damage.

Hitari thinks for a second, then smiles again. "That does sound likely, but I doubt you have as little soul as you feel, Itami. After all, you are the only spirit of you lot. Why do you think the rest have - not a vessel, not a carrier - real, physical bodies?" He tilts his head. "Perhaps Fate, just as it messed up this world, found you undeserving to make up for the rest."

You two manage to enter the dense tree line - the branches on the ground become few, but they're still around. "Okay," Shiawase pants quietly. "Now we. . .just need to make it to the cliff. Nothing ever goes around there. . .nothing but a cougar or two, but they're. . .pretty friendly." She nods straight ahead.

To be undeserving of a body I never knew is of no consequence, Itami fires back. And I am more than capable of taking that of which I do not have.

"And yet, that child - the completely human, vulnerable child from who-knows-where - you never even tried to take them?" Hitari asks. "Why not? It would be. . .simple."

Rin is. . .unique, Itami settles. I'm more curious to see them break themselves rather than me wearing on them from the inside.

Hitari laughs. "So, what I'm hearing is that you care for him?"
