My name is Catherine and I'm from the North of Ireland. If you want to know a bit about me check out my profile. I've just joined Sylestia around a day ago and I am surprised at how much I'm enjoying it so far. This is a very good game, it's fun and rewarding. It kind of reminds me of a mix of two games I play already, Pokemon because of the battles and Neopets due to the caring for virtual pets. I'm not sure about the breeding and genetics though, is there a wiki or something on it as I'm finding it hard to grasp? TIA for any replies and I'll reply again soon :)

First off, if you enjoy pet games and pokemon, I'd highly recommend pokefarm Q if you've never played it! It's basically just pokemon but as a pet game.
Second off, there are a bunch of good guides on breeding, but I'll just put some basics here;
-Each pet has 6 trait slots - 3 "genes" that appear on the base body, and 3 "mutations" that change the base body.
-Of these, each pet will carry a hidden and a dominant trait in each trait slot. Each trait has an associated letter. If they don't have a trait, the letter will be N.
-(additionally, hidden is also called carried and dominant is also called visible)
-You can see hidden traits by genetically testing your pets, users will often do this for free.
-When two pets mate, the resulting egg will take a trait from each parent in a punnet style fashion - so if one has AB and one has CD, you could get AB, AD, BC (CB), or CD.
-(additionally, trait dominance is ordered by letter order - so you can get AB, but not BA. the exception to this is N - it will always be dominant, since it's just a lack of trait and you can't hide nothing)
-Each trait also has a colour, the baby's colour is between the hex values of their parents, this sometimes works, and sometimes it's just weird.
So that being said, let's draw up an example pair:
Here's one of my main studs and a gal I've paired him up with multiple times;
The resulting kids are:
Since our stud didn't have anything in gene two, even though the gal did, none of the kids have visible gene 2s. Both of them have iridescence as gene 3, all four kiddos have it. Three of the kids have dad's gene 1, the other guy has a completely different trait that was a hidden. Overall, you can mostly see where the traits come from, but the hidden traits can sneak in and surprise you if you aren't paying attention.
I hope you found this crappy little guide helpful, and welcome to sylvestia!

Thank you both very much for your replies. I really appreciate the information Lonelypastelcrow. It will take me a while to get my head around it all but I'm sure I'll get there. Thanks for directing me to Pokefarm Q by the way ;)
