So I caught a Oriole Nixi in the fest zone and they gave me a message as usual for the task.
When I looked to my inventory, I only see the one snare trap that I always had. I tried reloading the page many times, and I still didn't get 3 more. As you can see, I only have 1 that hasn't been used. I don't know what other way there is to show proof except these 2 screenshots.

How many traps did you use on it? You automatically get 3 traps when you encounter it regardless of whether you actually caught it or not (so if you didn't have any traps beforehand, well now you have 3 to catch it with), so is there a possibility you used the new traps on the pet?

I had 3 traps before I caught it. I used 2 up for the nixi I caught and was left with 1.

I'm not seeing any indication in the database of the traps being lost. Unfortunately, tracking for this is extremely limited. Since the Task Log automatically adds items to Inventory, there's no tracking for items just being stacked onto an existing stack. Additionally, there is no tracking at all for traps being used.
The only other explanation would be that you completed the task and then used the traps before checking your Inventory to see how many you had.
Unfortunately, I can't provide anymore information than that. =\
