Uh, so, not sure what's going on, but I just battled a few pets in the festival area and none of them were counted on the leaderboards, however, the leaderboards do say that I have defeated 15 Zolnixies and 30 Puffadores, which is not true at all, I have no idea how it came up with that. XD
(I haven't battled any Puffs and no Zolnixies today.)
Resolved! I feel dumb, but I get it now!

This is a pretty common cause of confusion. But the fighting contests actually give points based on the pets in your party. For example, I have a three-lup party, so every enemy I beat gives me three points on the lup board.
If it were based on what you fought, certain species (nephs and ferries) would be very difficult to gain points for. And others (the off-season and non-tamed fabled) would be completely impossible.

Yeah, but I haven't fought any Puffs at all.... So >.>

Do you have any puffs in your party? It's based on what's in your party. Not what you fight.
