8 hour car rides... I go on those way, way, WAY too often.
Right. Here's my survival list:

-Mobile Device, for chatting with friends, gaming, binge-watching Youtube, and browsing Pinterest.

-CD or DVD player, for playing music and/or movies.

-A headset or earbuds, in case somebody gets bothered by said movies or music.

-A hand held consoul, for more intense gaming.

-Snacks. Snacks are essential. Lots and lots of snacks.

-A book of either Sudoku or brian puzzles, for mental stimulation.

-Sketch pad and pencils, for your creative streaks.

-A blanket and neck pillow, for comfort.

-A good, engaging book to read. Just don't get carsick.

-A small flashlight, in case it gets dark on the road.

-A deck of cards and a clipboard, good for if you you have a sibling you want to play with. Use the clipboard as a table top.

-A list of classic road trip games. My personal favorites are "Who can spot the most (X)", Punch Buggie, and "Find as many different state names on licence plates as you can".

My list probably isn't original but:

- taking along something such as an IPod Nano or Android device with plenty of movies and videos downloaded on it. It's always nice to have variety so that you won't get easily bored. Also bringing multiple sd cards (packed with more movies) along helps too, just don't lose them.

- Portable game systems like a Nintendo DS or PSP. They can also double as something to watch movies on. If you have an R4 card, you can use it to put on a variety of applications to use on DS like an emulator or E-Reader. This long road trip can be a chance to finally beat that challenging game!

- If someone else in the car has the same game or system, you can pass the time with multiplayer matches.

- A book or an E-Reader. It helps if you brought a variety of stories or downloaded hundreds of them.

- Let's not forget about bringing chargers/car chargers/portable batteries/backup power for the trip! They are usually cheap to purchase.

- An mp3 player or cd player. Have a large variety of music or a shuffle feature to keep the tunes fresh in your mind. Music can also help train your imagination, so you can get lost in your thoughts during this time.

- It doesn't even have to be limited to music. You could listen to Podcasts, Audiobooks, Self-Help CDs, or take the time to learn a new language while on the go.

- Speaking of imagination, it is a good form of entertainment if you're the type of person that enjoys daydreaming. With or without music helping to fuel it, you'll be surprised at what stories your brain can come up with.

- Entertaining yourself with the scenery that passes by during the long ride.

- A notebook to sketch or write in. There are a lot of things to do on paper, and who knows what kind of epic stories you'll come up with on the spot? Coloring and puzzle books aren't necessarily a bad idea either.

- Mad Libs are also a fun way to pass the time. It's recommended to buy a big book of them with plenty of libs to spare.

- Some sort of hands on activity like a craft or musical instrument.

- If you have phone access, using data sparingly to access webpages to read can help pass time. This is best to do if you're incredibly bored but have a need to read about tv show trivia or stuff on lost media.
(There are ways to save webpages offline and text versions in the form of PDFs for alternative forms of viewing as well)

- Conversations with others in the car. There are lots of different topics and things to talk about. There are conversation games you can play such as guessing what the other person is thinking of, Would You Rather, quizzing each other, or even telling each other exciting stories.

- Trading Card Games and Toys are entertaining, don't forget!

- If all else is unappealing, there's always sleeping off the 8 hours. Lay the seat back, cover yourself with a comfy blanket, and rest your head on a fluffy pillow. Some other misc. things to help make your sleep relaxing is including a sleep mask, ear plugs, and taking some sleeping aids like Melatonin.

-----
I've been on several long road trips myself, but all I have ever done on them was watch movies, listen to music, and read webpages to pass the time. I still think what I came up with from the top of my head are pretty great ideas.

If you need suggestions of sites to help convert videos (for devices like DVD Players which can hold certain restrictions on what formats can be played) or webpages, I can message you with some.
