I doubt this is in the right place, but I've noticed there are upgrades to a pet's moves they can learn. How do you get those to start leveling up...? I haven't seen a proper guide on it around

They only progress when you're battling in the lost grave (the current last area in the game). This guide does talk about it (and as far as I can tell, everything about the battle system). It's called ability expertise, although in the directory it's called ability rank, in post five

Ranking pet attacks only happens in the lost grove. It takes a lot of time, but when they do rank up, it makes a tremendous difference!
