Yellow Eyes
By Riley Moore
We belong together, you and i.
like the sun and moon.
We have hunted together, singing to the skies.
and we have mourned together, our songs no longer joyous as our starving cubs died.
but no matter what, we belong together, like the sun and moon.
we run along our trail, our bodies and hearts mated forever.
my dear, sweet Yellow Eyes.
But now you lay dying, steel jaws closed upon your frame.
i whimper, and your eyes open a moment before you sigh one last time.
your blood stains the snow, red and spreading.
i howl, cursing the humans who laid this trap.
you whimper one last time, then your beautiful eyes close one last time as your soul leaves.
leaves to hunt among your brethren in the stars forever more,
my heart is ripped from my chest to follow you on your journey.
i swear it to you, my love, we shall run through the heavens forever, together.
and as you run with brethren long forgotten, i race down here, trying to erase the pain from my heart.
at last, my vision clouds. my spirit soars, and my body drops. i run the Spirit Trail
and you meet me at the top.
our glorious, ghostly song wafts through the heavens right before we race through them, together again,
as close as the sun and moon. |
