staves are the things that look like lanterns. In order to get the good bonus game, you need to get a stave in every column (not in one round, you just need to get one stave in each column eventually)
when you get staves reset, your staves are reset and let's say, for example, you already got 2 and only needed 1 more stave, your staves reset and you need 3 again to get to the really good bonus game
as for the bonus game, you know the face thing that you get when your staves reset? basically, for the bonus game, as soon as you find 3 of those stave reset things, the bonus game is over.
