Is there a way to create designs in the wardrobe without an essence, not to generate a pet but to simply design? I did some googling and read about a preview generator but I cannot find it.

Yes. If you go straight to the generator under "Explore", and make a design, you can save it. The button for it is on the right at the bottom of the page.
