i don't see a place to spend or exchange them anywhere! What gives?

They're definitely a weird form of "currency"...
AP can be used to buy stuff in the wardrobe (hairstyles, clothes, etc. - not avatar items, though), extra save slots in the generator, and new slots for party presets. There may be other uses that I'm not aware of... but those are the main ones.

Advancement Points can be used to buy some things in the wardrobe and add more saving slots on the generator. Also, you can only hire Farm Maiden Rosemary after you reach 10,000 AP.
