so there has to be a list of your friends somewhere, right? I can't find it anywhere and I know I have accepted some requests.

The friend list is a bit different here. In order to get someone on your friends list, you have to send them a friend request (and have them accept).
Accepting a friend request only adds your name to their friend list, it does not add their name to yours. It is one of the reasons I have no issue with accepting random friend request. Lol.

From what I understand for them to show up on your friends list (contacts in your inbox area) you have to send them a friend request as well.
