On dark cold night my life as i knew it changed why well because they took my brother. My name's Kita though some know me Talei i'm a street kid in the walled city of Nevala that's right they now have whole cities walled off. The reason because of the so called "beasts" angry, dangerous creatures that lurk in the shadows. So they created a group called the hunters to find and remove them any way possible. Even those who live in the cities are at risk i think that's why they took Reuon because he was different, angry and alone. By taking him they took away the last family i had so i made a promise i'd find a way to leave and get him back. He meant the world to me having been in my life since the beginning. Many years ago before Kita was born the cities were peaceful, open and free with lots people coming and going. But when the king and queen disappeared then went bad.

The "beasts" appeared and the new king declared travel too dangerous and that the open cities to risky so the walls went up and travel was banned. After Reuon was taken i ended up on the streets with no home, no friends or family, no food, no way to keep warm and only dreams to keep me going. I never knew my real family they left when i was a baby so i was raised by a nice older lady who took in strays like me. She wasn't well though and eventually passed away leaving us kids alone in the house but that's when they came. Hunters along with the town guards and and mayor had been waiting to get in there for us kids which they hadn't to do while the lady had been alive. So now that she was gone they came grabbing any and all kids that they could catch. Reuon was fast but i wasn't so he distracted them till i could find a safe place to hide that's how he got caught. There was a small broken tv cabinet sitting in a dark corner perfect for me so that's where i hid waiting for them to leave. When i finally left it was dark and the house was cold, empty and even more of a mess than before. I slept in my bed that night knowing tomorrow i'd be leaving as this place was no home or safety for me.

I had woken to silence which weird and a little scary because before there had been lots of kids running around and at least three other often temporary girls sharing my room. Summer, Alesia and Lelei were the last ones they'd been nice though Alesia often woke crying for her lost parents and siblings. Kita kicked herself in the leg "no Kita lets not look back at that sadness" she said to herself as she wandered the streets looking for food. Alesia had been lucky she had her talent for singing so had joined with a gypsy group Brise, Seio and Maie that traveled around the city singing and dancing for coins food and shelter with Summer joining them now supposedly. The only ones from the house that Kita really saw much of now was Coran and Tala another brother and sister pair who had been one of the last kids to join the group. Tala came first after she'd been caught stealing food on multiple occasions but it was only when we followed her one of her "trips" that we found out about Coran.

Great kids but a little to much trouble then they were worth at times. Making her way down the narrow streets a noise caught her attention a thudeink followed by the lights shutting off. Counting off with my fingers i tapped out a beat picking up the pace until a second softer thudeink sounded and the lights turned on again. Ok she thought the lights were out for two counts of five and three beats of four taps* so the lights will off till to tomorrow in another two counts and three beats if that was the case then i better hurry as the guards would be around to clear off or catch any who were still out. Racing forward Kita headed into the market square grabbing whatever food scraps, coins and random bits she could find sticking to the shadows as much as possible and always keeping one eye on the darkening sky as the lights shut off again she dashed for the alleyways slowly turning and twisting towards the basement den where she had slept before but unsurprisingly there was no space as other street kids were there already. Joining some other kids we all headed out searching for hidden spots that were safe to sleep in. Just as we got to a split alleyway another softer noise caught my attention so instead of following the others and going right i headed left twisting around two narrow houses into a tiny space created by a tall hedge and fence line between the two houses.

That's when i realized why us street kids never went left down that alley at night there barely a meter from me was a long snow covered path on which three tall town guards stood by one of the gates leading out. Crouching low behind the hedge i realized just how perfect my hideaway was though it needed work i could almost perfectly sit and watch people walking past including the guards...... ....As for the roof on hot days and nights in the summer it was warm and shaded with lots of water to drink and a few struggling fruits and vegetables to eat or replant having already grown some tomatoes and strawberries i was getting very good at it so was always searching for other plants to grow. Slipping up the broken rubble steps added to by her she climbed up and over the roof wall and into the garden a tangled mess greeted her though better than it had been. Removing the seeds and other bits from her pockets she sorted through the mess planting some of it in the garden beds before adding water to all the beds. Lying down under the berry vine my thoughts turned inward was they always did, to what next where would i go and how, would i be able to leave this place my little home.

The street lights clicked off the light of the moon and stars shone down as i drifted off not knowing when if at all things or maybe at least my life would change. Ha if only i knew what would happen next i may not have been so calm. I woke to the fighting first not something new here in the city but certainly unwanted as it would bring the guards and extra patrols afterwards making it even harder for me to come and go safely. Crawling on my belly i peered of the roof and down to the three guys fighting down below though they were to far away i could hear what they were

Hi i'm Marlei i live with my mum, dad, twin brothers Ben and Shiloh, and my sister Emma. We live here at Bluewood cottage with our dogs, cats while out back in the fields we have two pigs, sheep, a cow and some chickens. Guess what though my parents and I made a deal if i got good grades and did all my chores without complaining we could get a pony when i turned twelve which is today. We are all going to a farm in the country to look at their ponies. It's time for us to go it is a looooong drive to get there so we play I spy for a while then we start thinking of names for the pony. "Dad how much longer is it??" says Shiloh. Dad turns "Well do you see the that hill there it's the farm is just over that" he says. We all crane our necks looking at the big hill watching as we get closer uppppp and then dooown all of a sudden there it is Stormy Vale Farm. The name is written on the gate we pass under it's so pretty with horses and cows scattered all over the deep green fields. We all tumble out as the car pulls up to a house an elderly lady looks up from her gardening "hello have you come to see my garden??" she asks. "No mam we are not though it's very pretty we are looking for Daniel." mum says, The lady grins happily and says "he's over there playing with his big toys" giggling she waves over at a man in the distance before turning back to the garden. As we walk towards the truck a man turns and approaches us

Chapter 1

Michi/Beni

It was a cold wet day as Beni walked into work, his full name was Michael Benjamin Joshua Tomas but he preferred Mich or Beni. For the last three years he had been working at a fruit, veg and flower shop a few blocks from his house working his way up to manager of the store. A woman's voice spoke up from the back as the bell dinged "sorry but we're not open yet can you come back in an hour or so??" Chuckling to himself Beni responded "I would but i'm the manager so could be hard to open without me" A loud thump followed by a groan sounded as a dark haired woman appeared rubbing her head. "Sorry boss forgot you'd be coming in today we're so busy i thought i'd get a head start on the orders." She said waving at the flowers scattered all around. Beni smiled "Thanks Olivia i was just coming to do that too. Valentines day always get busy for us so a early start is best."

Rien looked out of the car window at the rain pouring down despite her objections her father had insisted on picking her up from the airport if only to get ten more minutes to pester her into joining his banking company after she had left university. She had only been back in town for two hours and still he was jumping in with a sales spiel starting with how Tom her ex-fiance wasn't working there anymore as if that was the main reason for not working there.
