I don't know if I have an essence or not, do they appear in the inventory or are they somewhere else?

My understanding is if you are going through the tutorial you will get one in a satchel. Welcome to the game!!

You can get them by helping nurture pets, playing Jinxie's Jamboree, or beating pets in battle
They will appear in your inventory whenever you get one
