How many traits do the designs have to have? Is there a maximum? A minimum?

However many you would like! You can show your theme with 6 traits, or none, whichever you think makes them look best! Most people try to do at least 3 traits, 3 on a male, and 3 different traits on the female, as it shows how well your theme works with them. You can also use restricted traits as well, although most people try to avoid using them.
