I don't really expect anything will be done about this at this point, but i'm going to put it up because there are probably other people having technical difficulties with Snow Wars because of it because I have talked to a couple other people who observed the same.
If Snow Wars is played in a browser zoomed out to make it all fit on the screen, it starts to have major technical difficulties. For some i've talked to, it just gets real slow every turn. For others like myself, it works for a while, then just full on brings Sylestia to a screeching halt. When that happens, refresh doesn't fix it, and I usually have to wait several minutes for it to pull itself back together. A few times it has required just closing everything and waiting a while. Doesn't happen when the browser is at 100% size.
Edit: Arrrgggh. Still happens from time to time apparently. Sitting around while all of Sylestia is broken for good for 4 minutes, while other websites work just fine, because of Snow Wars breaking every single Sylestia tab.

This is something I have experienced as well.
The snow wars page is very large, so on a small 15 inch laptop, its impossible to fit the whole gameboard on my screen. So naturally, the first time or two I tried to play zoomed out. The first time I had to reload every single sylestia page because it caused any tab i had open at the time to completely hate life and become unusable. Reloading fixed the issue on the remaining pages, but only after I had closed out snowwars.
After that, I resolved to just playing on normal 100%, because that seemed to work and for AI battles at least I didnt have to worry too much about that top row. However, this is a major disadvantage for PvP battles, because that leaves that entire top row where I can't see what im doing. Yes, i can scroll around a bit, but in the heat of a PvP battle, and with only so much time to decide moves, anything up there ends to be forgotten. It also means I cant see things like turn timers or frostbite. However, if i scroll to see those things, that leaves the bottom row unviewable. It makes it hard to have a fair PvP battle.
However, if I zoom out, i am unable to skip turns. Thats when i have the biggest hang ups. If i have to skip for when i have no moves available, it lags so much that sometimes i wonder if im even going to be able to complete my /next/ move. It also lags each time the other player makes a move which kills some of my timer. When im zoomed in though, none of this is an issue. (theres some lag, but nothing that cant be chalked up to natural browser o net connectivity issues that could very well be my or my partners end)

Hm. What you both are describing sounds like a timeout issue than anything to do w/ zoom. I can't think of any reason the browser's zoom would affect something like that. Zooming in or out shouldn't affect anything but just the actual interfaces themselves (like it does w/ CometChat).
And a hung connection will make it so no other Sylestia tabs/loads will work while a connection is hung up - the server is made to restrict connections to one at a time per unique connection - basically.
I'll take a look when I can and will see about re configuring the backend scripts like how I recently did w/ how region chat works.

I just had the same exact hang, which again took 4-5 minutes to sort itself out, when I clicked Upgrade Snowballs, without Snow Wars even open. =/

Your issue issue is probably related to this:
