yup, if a pet is not tested their carry trait will be labeled as unnown (none), once you test it you will be able to know what traits your pet have.

If you want to do it yourself, yes - but Genetic Test Kits are expensive, so most people go to older users who've bought test kits previously (whether through chats or in this forum) to test their pets. I recommend you do the same.
