I know how to use essence, but how do you get it?

Cheapest way to get an essence, is to nurture - a lot. There is a small chance one will drop if you nurture eggs!
I think you can get essences from Jinxie's Jamboree too, but again, quite a small chance
Other ways include buying from the broker or the diamond shop, or participating in some fest activities.

Besides what Toxxicangel said, you can also find essence from battling, mission satchels, or at the end of dungeons. All small chances, which is why essences can cost quite a bit.
