I sold a genetic testing kit for about 50k and got a fee of about 2.6k. What's that all about?

That was a transaction fee. When you use the broker, you're putting something up for easy access sale for anyone to buy at their convenience, but this does create a transaction fee for the use. A lot of sale systems that sell items like this have this system in place, because of the convenience, people are more likely to buy from the broker rather then searching for individual sales threads. If you sell things through the "Items auction" forum, you can C.O.D. (Cash on Delivery) an item to a player for the full amount without the transaction fee. It just takes more work.

It's always been there. It's been there since i started playing and according to another user who applied before me it was there when she started as well. The transaction fee is percentage based, so it's easily noticed on high gold sale items. Maybe you guys missed this if you've sold from the broker before? It's a common thing in MMO auction houses/markets.

Well, it's the price of convenience. xD You don't have to be around 24/7 to try to make the sale and it's an easy/instant, no haggle arrangement.
