Hello,

I'm starting a fresh thread asking for breed suggestions for my next SDiT(Service Dog in Training) who will after finishing about 18 to 24 months(rough estimation, as it partly depends on how fastshe finishes her basic training) of training(by me as I both prefer to owner train, as well as there not being a local program that trains in all the service work branches I need: Psychiatric Service work for PTSD[Post Traumatic Stress Disorder] and Panic Disorder[when events in RL trigger these I can, and do get asthma attacks also, which can lead to me being hospitalized], Guide work[Seeing Eye Dog], I'm legally blind in one eye(while I DO have glasses frequent/chronic migrains don't always allow for me to wear them), and Mobility/Balance Assistance Service work[I currently walk with a cane even at home because I have poor balance[I can easily fall over, or run into things], and I have bad joint problems too). After my dog has compleated roughly 1 1/2 to 2 years worth of training She will be a full SD, and able to aid me in all places, not just those that permit pets(like PetSmart). There is a chance that she may compleat training ahead of time, but I just want to allow for any possible training difficulties that might occur.

In the next few posts you will see my current list of concidered breeds, a tally of how many times a breed or mix is recomended, my supplies wish list for referance purposes so IF any one know of places to get the supplies that may be better or have better quality supplies that they would like to recomend, and I'll also be listing my dogs name too, as I have picked it out now. ^.^

PLEASE be sure to PING me so I know you have posted.

Also I'd love to be forwared links and picutes to go along with your suggestions/recomendations, as those are great for me to use as referance as I try to narrow down my list.

18).

20).
.....

NOTE, and DISCLAIMER: I will concider X-Large/Giant Breed, and Medium Breed but ONLY mixes as the pure breeds may prove to be too large OR to small for the jobs. Ideal weigh rangebis 65 pounds to 80 pounds, the I MIGHT be able to concider mixes that have weight ranges of 80+ pounds IF they would be good canidits for what I need. I also understand that some, if not most of the breeds, and mixes I list are not commonly used in service work BUT my 2 previous SDiTs where of the ideal temperments, but their mixes were certianly not commonly used breeds. I however am of the mind that ALL breeds can be used as SDs, HOWEVER it's all about personality, and temperment/disposition. With that said I do know and understand that there are breeds that do tend to excel in SD work, while others take more time. I also know that pure breds tend to have more health issues as apposed to mixed breeds. I also understand that some dog breeds I list may be more energetic than others, while others may be more inclined to be over protective...this is why many if not all listed breeds will have the words "mix prefered" next to them in "()" and bolded, as I generally perfer mixed breeds anyway.

Misc. Info

I live in Northern California, in the foothills of the Sierra-Navada mountians. Temps range from 78 degrees fahrenheit to 110 degrees fahrenheit during the summer, with an a average of 90 degrees fahrenheit during summer. Winter is normally much more mild with tempatures ranging from 30 degrees fahrenheit up to 78 degrees fahrenheit, with an average of 65 degrees fahrenheit. Spring and Fall temps are generally mild and range in the 70s or maybe early 80s. Rain/Snow/Hail do occure though not very often with the drought. I don't go out without a ride most days in summer so IF I got a dog with lots of fur I would have the proper brushes/combs, regular baths, lots of drinking water, and there are good shady spots to relax/cool down too. I'll also be getting boots/socks for my dog to prevent burned/frozen paw pads.

Please note though I CAN NOT have pitbull or pitbull mix breed dogs due to a ban on the breed(s) where I'm currently living. :( I think it is because of the property insurance, not totally sure though.

From the point of view of a dog groomer, I would suggest not getting a husky, simply because they are a high-maitenance dog, which is the exact opposite of what you need.

They have a double coat that sheds a LOT, and you mentioned asthma, which generally isn't a good combination. (Edit: You mentioned brushes, but with husky fur, to truly prevent the massive shedding, you need a special Furminator brush + Shampoo/Conditioner along with a high-velocity dryer and lots of patience)

They are also very "talkative" and stubborn, so I feel like chances are it would take longer to train a husky than other breeds.

Plus, a lot of husky mixes tend to end up looking like wolves or wolfdogs, which might cause a bit of trouble down the road, either from stares or people questioning your dog.

My most recent SDiT dog was a Malamute mix, and I had no problem with keeping him groomed(I still have most of his gooming tools actually). Edit: Additionally I need a dog that will actually incurage or make me go out as apposed to a breed/mix that maybe too relaxed. Also their pulling instinct would be helpful to me as I need extra help walking(especially uphill), and IF/when I get my wheelchair a dog that can help pull a lightweight wheelchair would be a huge help.

I'm well aware of their apperance and their talkitiveness. There are quite a few Husky/husky mix dog owners locally, and regardless some people will always be ill informed no matter what sadly. Especially in areas that have a large population of people that misstreat those that are disabled just because they are different.

I do however understand your points, and see where you're coming from.
