Starters pets can actually be released once you finish the first region I believe. They cannot be released prior though.

Oop my bad spreading false info! I just know I tried to release mine once not long ago and got a popup telling me it wasn't possible.

What if it were optional, then? Like, the releaser could check a box that says "allow public reclaiming" or something. I just hate seeing so many tagged be gone forever because somebody got impatient for stable space after they captured a pet with the intent to sell it and nobody wanted it for the asking price. I mean, one assumes that if you manually release a pet, you really definitely do not want it, right?

It's pretty rare that a tagged or anything else worth having can't be given a way for free if someone is desperate to get rid of it. If someone isn't willing to do that, why would they choose to check the 'public reclaim' box? I just don't think that would end up saving very many themed.
