I sent a thing to someone, but they couldn't pay so much and returned it, and it showed up in my trades with the million-gold COD still on it.
Eventually I got enough gold to reclaim it, but I doubt this is intended behavior?

Was it manually returned or expired?

Manually returned. We were renegotiating for a lower price, so she sent it back.
