How do they work? What is a good way to use them? Is there a guide about them I can't find? Thank you.

It's easier to figure out proficiency points when you're farther ahead with your levels. Around level 25 is when your pets get 5 prof points, when they get a special move that helps you in battles depending on what tree to specialize in.

For now, your best bet is to keep on leveling to get more prof points.

The best distributions are usually putting all prof points in one stat, such as all HP for a tank-type pet and all strength or intelligence for an attacker pet.

There are guides on how to distribute points for a basic team, which I can link. But they start to be more effective at later levels. They're still good guides to adhere to. :) I'll link when I get on a computer.

Guide to Pet Speccing and Gearing!

Creating A Battle Party 101

Both guides are specifically for building battle parties for exploration, and proficiency points are just one of the parts in them.

A basic battle party consists of 1 tank (built with HP) and 2 attackers (either strength or intelligence), which these guides highlight for level up points, proficiency points, and equipment. Reading them might be a bit much for just your question, but proficiencies do go hand in hand with other aspects of what you need for battle. :)
