You can get pets by buying them from other players (go advanced search or sale/auction forums). If you visit the games/contests forum, there are some games that gives out pets for free (eg. my raffle: http://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=15273).
To get essences, you can buy them from other players on the trade broker, find them when battling wild pets (very rare), find them when nurturing egglings/hatchlings (very rare), or buy them with diamonds.
