You notice that they're worn down in the middle but are also somewhat dirty, almost as if they had been used a lot in the past but had been starting to be neglected at some point. You put a foot down and suddenly the step you were putting it on disappears.

You touch it and it gives you a small static shock. Farther away, you see another bit of fluff caught on a branch at eye level.

You have a couple close calls, but fortunately the steps are too narrow to really fall through. Eventually you reach the top and find yourself in a meadow. You turn around and the steps/chasm are gone.

They seem to be leading off into the forest, the lowest on the ground and the highest at your height.
