The alternatives take forever imo

Aside from buying them in the diamond shop, they drop very rarely from battles and appear rarely in the bonus games of jinxie's jamboree.

Another way is to nurture hatchlings/eggs. You can search for pets of a specific species that you want via advanced search, or just nurture other eggs through your hatchery. But they also drop randomly, I'm not sure how often they drop after every hundred or so nurtures.

Hope that helps, good luck!

What Flute said, and you can also find essences from mission satchels. All drop rates are really rare though, which is why they can be pretty expensive sometimes.

Also, I think the drop rate for nurtures is closer to 1000 than 100. But it really depends, since it's random, so if you're lucky, you can get one pretty fast. But usually it takes quite some nurtures to get an essence.

Pets age even when you are offline. The only time they stop aging is when the game is offline, like during the weekly 1hr maintenance on mondays, or when the site is taken offline for updates/unexpected maintenance.

There are different ways to get clothes. In your wardrobe, anything under "base", "styles", and "clothing" can be bought with diamonds or AP. AP is the cheaper way to buy with, since you'll get AP from playing the game, doing things like breeding, nurturing, and exploring. So with time, you will be able to buy everything using AP.

For things under "items", you can tell how the item can be obtained based on their icons.
The map shows items that can be obtained from fighting enemies.
Gold coins shows items that can be bought from the towns/merchants in the different regions.
The face indicates items that can be won from playing official forums games (this happens usually during festivals).
The sun indicates items that can be obtained from festivals, like fighting festival bosses/ festival shop.
The diamond indicates items that can be bought from the avatar shop at any time, but you'll need diamonds for these.
The calendar indicates "monthly items", which are items that can be obtained from the avatar shop only during the month it is on sale.

You can get them from the sanctuary market in the 2nd region, or ethernia market in the 3rd region. But you'll need to unlock those regions by exploring and following the storyline until you've reached there.

Otherwise, during festivals, there is also a merchant that sells those traps, but they may be out of stock if a lot of players buy them. Then you'll need to wait for it to be restocked, which happens every few hours.
Pet Aging and Maturity
Maturity is measured in hours and comes in four categories: Eggling, Hatchling, Adolescent, and Adult.

It takes roughly 72 hours (3 Days) for a newborn Eggling to become a Hatchling.
It takes roughly 144 hours (6 Days) for a Hatchling to become an Adolescent.
It takes 18 Days for an Adolescent to become an Adult.
So to become an Adolescent, would that be 6 days total, or 6 day plus the previous ~3 days?

I'm sure it means that after the 3 days then it takes 6 more days to become a Hatchling.
Wanna be friends??? I'm new and bored :3
