The walls around and behind you are all made of that smooth stone, but right in front of you it's jagged and of a different type as if there used to be an opening there but it was covered. Closer inspection reveals... claw marks?

You run into a tree you were fairly sure wasn't there earlier. You look around, but the trees are so close together in that direction that it's almost like a wall.

They go pretty deep but it looks like it was just a desperate attempt to dig out that went nowhere.
You could try checking the journal for anything else that's readable.
