Just for fun, you want to try this guy's outer god form?
I'm trying to get some ideas out on how I want to design him personally still so I don't have to keep using other people's art for ocs
But I'd love to see your take on a creepy, dreamlike, tarry eldritch beast
I'll draw whoever of yours you throw at me.

dang it was worth a shot. absolutely no one wants to ever draw him XD
Guess I'm drawing wholesome eldritch monsters for myself later
Uh, the rest of the OCs I have are more or less in that thread. Most anyways. My space dino Lux would be cool since he's like the only other kinda feral dude (other than Kai who I don't really use and the weird insect dragon Yen is.. But also terrifying) I have atm but I'd have color his ref first before I have anyone try to draw him.
I already have a palette for him so shouldn't take me too long.
I'll probably try Ts'aishen because honestly I prefer drawing humans because I don't botch the anatomy nearly as much, lol.

I have loved role play for years now, and have loved creating characters even longer. I hope to be able to get some inspiration for new characters from this as well as some much needed community with fellow role-players and OC creators.

Yo
I'm not sure if I was supposed to use the pinglist or not lol
Does anyone have any advice on writing sad backstories? Or sad shortish blurbs in general? Not the kind where you just yeet super tragic events at a character. I mean the sorta bittersweet things that give you a weird stomachache (or is that just me who gets that). I'm trying to make the reader sad, not just the character, because I like making readers cry. That sounds kinda mean.
I'm not trying to make a tragic character per se, I'm trying to give them an emotional story, if that makes any sense. By backstory, I don't mean the blunt summary thing you put in signup forms, but more like if the character were telling someone about their past, or if I were telling a story of the character's past (because really, form backstories aren't exactly tearjerking forms of writing).
I've had this problem for awhile now, because my attempts are either a. incredibly stupid sounding or b. not very sad. And I also don't have that thing called inspiration, so I kinda gave up. But I want to make people cry in my RPG because it's quite character backstory based (and also a test of my character creation/development skills), so I would like help xD
Also idk if I should post here but WoS is dead because the person running it is an idiot and is currently ignoring the fact that it exists

the pinglist is just for contests and announcements for me to put out but I'll probably make one for advice too I should do that now actually before I forget
The best advice I can give for a sad backstory is to just not try to force it and kinda focus on how it would affect them and their personality in the present. Might be biased because I never really try to write any of my characters to elicit pity out of anyone and want to avoid making a sob story or otherwise derailing story with their "dad never loved me" diatribes. They're still people at the end of the day and life moves on.
I just write it as a statement of fact and let their actions as a character speak more to their history. Not all of them are great people and not all of them, or any of them really, have much figured out. Some come out of bad things more or less fine and others are a bit more jaded or wisened out of the experience.
A few of my sci-fi characters have sad backstories but whether that's out of plain misfortune or a normal circumstance of their nutso universe, I leave it up for interpretation.
I'll use one I wrote here for my space captain as an example but never really fleshed out too much since most of what she's briefly (and I mean briefly, she doesn't like to speak about her past because it affects her so much) spoke about.
(Canonically I consider her to suffer from quiet BPD and PTSD from extreme childhood neglect. It's not something I'll explicitly state with her since I want to focus mainly on her outside of her conditions. They do affect how she handles stress, death, and abandonment as well as her normal means of coping (drinking, casual flings, and avoiding people) though)
"Originally hailing from a small city and a large family from Siberia, Irene's family has been more than ravaged by the perils of war and poverty in her home country. Thankful to be born at the tail end of a series of climate-change induced battles on Earth known as the Great Overhaul War and in a rekindling of human spirit in mandated peace, Irene hardly remembers a life of economic hardship, only struggling through the emotional hardships of her parents in a new world that had suffered such a grave loss of human life.
Perhaps it was such a thing that had her take to the stars in the first place, joining the Galactic Federation at the age of 16 when her father had passed and her ailing mother had taken her own life soon after.
She doesn't speak much of her history, simply describing her childhood as "unpleasant" when she isn't mouthdeep in a bottle of alcohol. She speaks even less of her former husband, Xenon Eldiram, but seems strangely mentally haunted by him and his ailing planet on his death. She holds great concern and respect for her adoptive son, Yolvet Eldiram."
And what she's mentioned in character mostly has just been.. like a single post out of a 2 year rp, honestly. She absolutely does not talk about herself much and always puts her crew first. She's the type of person to bury her emotions though just for them to creep on her later explosively. We are very character focused as a group between missions though, but she's perpetually the closed book of the group even to the people that really care for her. :>
"It really depends on where you grow up at. I grew up in a region known as Siberia. As a child, I remember things used to be much harsher than they are now. From what I do know of our history, our planet had just gone through a rather strange warming period just before we fully dedicated ourselves to space inhabitance. There was a lot of.. fear mongering, I suppose. And not a lot of faith in our public figures or technology of the time. I don't honestly remember much, I was very young during this all, but I remember my mother always being at her wits end about it all and even as I got older. She was a simple woman who just wanted an honest living. She did well for me, even at the expense of herself." Irene ashed her cigarette, taking a drag of it. "Our region was fairly well protected in terms of climate, but many others had to relocate. There was some strife for a time before the Federation started up. Especially amongst the Americans. It's funny how it took us making contact with the Yu'nits to really put aside our own differences. Humans are an honestly ridiculous species when it comes down to it, but at least we're good at surviving our own messes."

Sad backstory?
Go tlak to league of legends characters. Those guys have serious sob stories.
Someone close to them dying
Kicked out of society
A l o n e
^^top picks for sad backstories
Oh and effects.
But yeah. If you read something sn dit make you cry, it's probably a good idea for a sad backstory.
