5th edition is the simplest version out there right now. Starting at an earlier edition would actually be more confusing for new people.
This edition of D&D was meant to go back to the grass roots and get new people involved who had never played. Character building is streamlined and fairly simple (some min-maxing can happen for experienced players, but they cannot break their character too badly).
Also, I've started adding some possible bonuses for the different mutations, but feel free to make suggestions as well. School suddenly got a lot more stressful, so I'm not being able to spend as much time on this as I had hoped.
However I do still intend to set up Sylestia D&D. Getting the mutations/genes figured out is the most time consuming step, but not the only one.
If you have access to a monster manual feel free to make suggestions for their basic attacks/move speed/ etc. based on creatures of a similar size/type. (So a horse is pretty close to a Quitari, etc.)
