He doesn't know. Sanshi saw it was broken but didn't know how it broke, so she went and told Curio since she knew he could fix it.

It didn't look like anything fell out or got taken- his guess is that there's simply too many files inside, and the weight of it caused one of the hinges to break off.

...desks are literally made to hold files. And god paper made from god trees is much lighter than regular paper.
