Jacie hesitates, and then quietly said in the meekest voice she could muster, "Can I at least know where we are going?"

I weigh the options. To it, or to another shop that might not have food. I'll look inside first, I tell myself, and if there is a shadow person, I'll decide from there

The door refuses to budge at first, but with a bit of shoving, it unsticks and you head insixe to find the bakery in a state of disarray. Tables and chairs are overturned, and the ground is strewn with baked goods, but several of the buns on display are relatively untouched.

You can hear the wail of police sirens approaching.

I freeze, then had the thought of hiding. I try to find a cabinet to hide in.

There's nowhere to hide except behind the counter.

So I hide behind the counter.

In my ducky, hidey position, I try to find at least one baked good I can get to without getting out of my hiding place.

There's a bun two inches from your nose, still warm.

The police sirens stop and you can hear uneven footsteps, then a gruff voice and a kid protesting from outside.

I quickly grab the bun. I decide that since the police were near me, I'd have to stay here, behind the counter. They probably won't check here unless they hear something.
