It seems to be a necklace of some sort, with a silver chain and a locket at the end. As you take it off the hook, some of the links disintegrate.

After some time, the trees begin to thin out rapidly and the ground slopes downhill. Pretty soon, you're standing on a beach. Black sand crunches underneath your feet, and the sea looks like smooth glass, no tides or even a ripple, and you can't imagine how that breeze reached you from all the way here.

I stare in awe at the water for a few moments. I walk as close to it as I dare without touching it, not wanting to disturb the water in fear of angering some terrible, vengeful thing. Turning around, I look for a high mountain I can use as a vantage point.

You look up, but all you can see are sheer cliffs, to the left, right, and back of you, which is strange, because you don't remember there being any cliffs when you came down here. In fact you don't know how you managed to get down here at all. As far as you can tell, the beach you're standing on is the only place with a beach, except for this area the cliffs all drop straight down into the ocean.

rose bends down then picks a bit of the substance off the ground. she then moves it through her fingers like sand, trying to decifer what it is. after being unable to identify it she opened up her guide and tries to find it.

The Ejection button is still there, tempting you to press it. You cautiously push it without sitting on the toilet just in case, and a strong jet of water shoots up from the toilet, straight into an open panel in the ceiling that you hadn't noticed before. Then the panel slams closed and you can no longer see that it was even there in the first place. Somehow, the water avoided splashing on anything in such a way that it looked like nothing had happened.

It's far more fine and slippery than sand, picking it up is almost as difficult as trying to hold water.
The guide reads,
This appears to be the shredded powder of some sort of metal.
