I go over and pretend to be serving them or perhaps cleaning but strike up a conversation. Eventually casually asking about the pouch.

He crouched down and moved his hand through the area near your leg. He seems to hit something, and with tug he plucks off a vine-like creature, taking the torch he had and burning it up.
