Oh! I see where the misunderstanding came from. By "new" trait, I meant "available trait that the pet does not currently have."

Consider this Puff, who has Carried Jeweled Wings--

"Reginae"

The Papillon trait did not exist yet when this Puff hatched. So using a "PoAR" on him might, by chance, give him the Papillon trait . . . or it might give him any one of the 46 other non-Restricted traits that could fit into one of his open slots. It would be completely random, just as with Disruptors.
